In an age where people insist on screwing themselves over by getting into 35 year mortgages at variable rates, hoping for the best, and then blaming banks when things go south, I'm not surprised that so many other standards keep falling by the wayside. Keeping a set of personal standards with respect to how you live your life isn't always easy. Sometimes there are tough choices that have to be made.
I've noticed an alarming decline in values among people of all ages. I don't mean old school Sunday church values. I'm happy to see some of those decline. I mean things like personal hygiene and manners. I mean what happened to personal grooming? Men who don't bother trimming their nose hairs. People who don't cut their nails. Women who wear dresses or skirts without shaving their legs. People who don't see the dentist and have that crusty smile. Men who don't wash their hands after using the lavatory. Pardon me while I puke.
Also, whatever happened to manners and interpersonal ability? Things like please, thank you, hello and goodbye seem to be on the decline. George Carlin was right to make fun of people for thinking they can save the planet when they haven't even learned to care for one another yet. The man was brilliant.
I've gotten into trouble as of late for being too harsh on some people. While it's true that I have had a busy and stressful fall, winter...year...only part of it is to blame for my snappiness. I'm just plain fed up with rudeness. I take a lot of pride in the fact that I treat people that I am on good terms with very well. I've been accused of being overly nice. I've been called weird, creepy, strange and numerous other things for the crime of asking people how they are doing and paying them well deserved compliments. I like to encourage people I get a long well with and I make acquaintances easily. But I find that making long term friends is much more difficult because I keep sticking to these damned standards.
But when it comes to all of these things I can only say that if you don't like it, look in the mirror. Tough shit, I'm not going to change any time soon.
But that's just the way I see it.
