Now that we're all into the Christmas boozing season (otherwise known as Office Party season), it falls to me, your resident know-it-all to make a silly blog post about the best booze to drink during the happy time.
It's key to remember that during Christmas you are inundated with offers of food and drink. So much of the food is high fat, high calorie deliciousness. But it's so bad for you. So be sure to drink strategically, with this in mind. Your boozing ought not to make matters worse. Remember as well that sweet drinks cause the worst hangovers.
So many people make the mistake of falling into the rum and eggnog trap. That stuff will kill you, though. So full of sugar and fat, the fastest way to gain Christmas belly insulation is to drink rum and eggnog. Stay away from that evil nonsense. You're much better off going with a nice triple gin and tonic. It's a nice thin drink that will help to digest the high fat food you will pack into that stomach of yours.
To ensure that you don't get too drunk too fast or have a lethal hangover, be sure to make every third drink a water. A big, big water. Also, ensure that if you're going to drink both beer and liquor that you drink the liquor first. Don't put liquor on top of beer. You will pay for it.
With respect to beer, also stay away from the heavy stuff. You're going to be fat enough as it is, so stick to the thinner, lighter beers. Those of you who are beer snobs can really, truly kiss my ass as well. I like Bud Light, Bud Light Lime, Coors Light and Corona. You guys can stick to your sour, bitter tasting microbrewery crap just to look cool. But phoney sophistication don't impress-a-me much.
Some of us will spend a few evenings doing light boozing with wine. Red wine can be an awful hangover causer, though, so try to track how much you drink. Keep an eye on the alcohol content of the wines you drink this season. Those 12.5-13%ers are always a good bet. The heavier stuff should be reserved for dinners heavy on red meat. For wine drinking alone, stick to the lighter fare.
Finally, plan your boozing ahead of time. There is never a good reason to get behind the wheel drunk (and no...0.05 isn't drunk). Christmas is always the heaviest enforcement time, so just stay at a friend's or cab it home. Stay safe, treat each other well, and have a good time. Oh...and if you're an angry drunk, just stay home and let the rest of us have some fun.
Cheers!
But that's just the way I see it.
